KOKOGAWAYO is the abbreviation of Koperi Kopi Wanita Gayo.
The KOKOGAWAYO Estate is special in that it is a woman only cooperative. This encourages exposure to the international market and promotes the increase in the well-being and support of women in the industry.
Located in Bener Meriah, also well-known as “The land of the White Elephant”, the Estate shares the environment with animals in their natural habitat. Due to its high inhabitance of animals and centuries of experience, the Gayo people can source manure as well as coffee pulp, leaves and parchment, to turn into organic fertiliser for the plantation.
Due to the high growing altitude of the plantation and help from the shade of the trees, the coffee cherries can ripen slowly hence allowing full development of flavour. After the cherries have completely ripened, they are hand-picked, pulped and naturally fermented before being washed and carefully graded.
