This regional blend was produced by various smallholder farmers in the Huehuetenango region in northern Guatemala. The producers here typically own a couple of hectares for growing coffee, and wet-process and dry the coffee on their own land. They dry the clean parchment in the sun on small patios. Growers process their coffee themselves since centralised wet mills are very unusual in the region. Once the coffee is dry enough, the producers try to find the best selling price for their beans.
Unex has its intake point and quality lab in Huehuetenango. They do what they can to reach the producers and offer them better prices than middlemen travelling around the country, buying coffee at low prices. The Unex quality team selects the best coffees from the region for these regional Huehuetenango coffees. They receive samples from many producers across the region and evaluate the physical and cup quality. Depending on this quality, they agree on a price with the producer. Depending on the profile and the offered volume, the coffee can go into the microlot category, the regional Huehuetenango category or the special Sierra Morena regional selection.
This Huehuetenango regional blend is a solid and structured Guatemalan mild, with sweet fruity notes and a mild acidity. It will easily help carry a blend, or convince you as a single origin espresso with its balanced sweetness, round body and winey fruit notes.
