Founded in 1998 with just 48 members on the shore of Lake Kivu, Kopakama has always been focused on establishing a stable price and market for their coffee.
Profits from coffee sales have been used for building their washing stations and providing access to water and electricity for the community.
In 2013 the cooperative purchased a plot of land, which is now owned and farmed collectively by 244 women and has been named ‘Ejo Heza’ (a beautiful tomorrow). This has enabled more women than before to be members of the cooperative and to directly benefit from coffee farming, as well as to participate in training and working in solidarity and with the support of other women, sharing their knowledge as well as childcare responsibilities.
