Robusta was discovered growing wild in the Belgian Congo (later Zaire and then later the Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1898, which is, in modern times, mainly grown in the northeast of the country in areas such as Isiro and the lowlands of Ubangi, Uele, Kivu, Kasai and Bas-Congo.

Arabic varietals (mainly Bourbon) are grown at the higher elevations in Kivu and Ituri.

The DRC produce around 300,000 bags of coffee per annum (although mainly Robusta), with the harvest periods being September to January in the North and March to June in the South.
