Coffee came to PNG in 1890 when the first Jamaican Blue Mountain seeds were planted. Given the similar soil conditions and climate (to Jamaica), PNG happily claim they have their own "Blue Mountain coffee". Naturally the true judges are coffee lovers around the world and there are certainly some outstanding coffees coming out of PNG. PNG tends to be organic - whether certified or not - as it is very difficult to attain synthetic pesticides and fertilisers. Accordingly, the coffee tends to be low in caffiene and acidity. PNG coffee is usually full bodied and fruity, slightly chocolatey with a dry finish. Definitely worth a try. Varietals used include Bourbon Arusha, Mundo Novo and Caturra - as well as the original Blue Mountain variety. |
