Despite neighbouring Ethiopia, it is believed that coffee was not produced in Kenya until 1893 - introduced by French Holy Ghost Fathers from Reunion Island.

About 70% of Kenya coffee is produced by small holders.

The primary growing regions are those around Mt. Kenya (Nyeri, Murang'a, Kirinyaga, Embu & Meru), Nakuru, Machakos and Kiambu.

Coffee is graded after it is milled:

  • E (Elephant Bean - based on the shape of the bean which has an "ear" on each seed - screen 20)
  • PB (Peaberry)
  • AA (screen size 17 or 18 - over 7.2mm)
  • AB (screen size 15 or 16 - over 6.8mm)
  • C (thin coffee beans in the 6.2mm screen)
  • T (broken, faulty, thin and/or small)
