Getting Started - Different Home Roasting Methods

To roast coffee you need to have green, unroasted coffee beans.  We have a wide range of green beans from basic through to specialty. To start out, we recommend trying one of the cheaper origins to perfect your technique then moving onto some 400g packs of a wide range (perhaps select one from each geographical area) to identify your favourite bean and/or experiment with blending.

  • Air Roasting
    Air Roasting
    Instructions on how to use an ordinary popcorn popper to air roast your coffee. Air roasting can also be done with an i-roast.
  • Oven Roasting
    Instructions on how to roast your coffee in a fan forced oven. Think muesli and you are on the right track.
  • Corretto Roasting
    Corretto Roasting
    This one is an interesting option. The idea started when using a heat gun and stirring the beans. An Australian woman came up with the idea of using a bread maker to keep the beans moving.
  • Pan Roasting
    The simplest of all methods - very similar to how beans were first roasted and still are today in some areas of the world. Alternatives are to use a pot, with a lid on it and shake it over the element, or a Whirley Pop.
  • Behmor
    Behmor
    The Behmor Plus is our most highly recommended roaster. It is significantly cheaper than other bench top roasters, roasts a higher quantity, is programmable OR manually controlled and includes an after burner.

    Grant built this roaster many years ago. We still use it now and again - especially when we're short and need some coffee to mature quickly.
