In Ethiopia, locals pronounce the name of the southwestern region as Kafa (or Käfa), sounding very close to an open "Kah-fa.", with Kaffa and Keffa both used interchangeably in English.
The Käfa Zone, among the well-known Yirgacheffe, Sidamo and Harrar, is a region of immense global significance, particularly as the undisputed genetic origin of coffea arabica, the world's most popular coffee species.
Located in Ethiopia’s mountainous southwest, Keffa is the site of the famous Kaldi coffee legend and holds the largest remaining wild coffee forests, which serve as a critical genetic reservoir. Its ecological value is recognized by the UNESCO Kafa Biosphere Reserve designation, protecting its unique montane cloud forests and biodiversity.
Käfa remains central to Ethiopia's agricultural economy, with its administrative centre at Bonga, standing as a prime example of Ethiopia's lush and fertile land.
